The Analysis

Dataline, successfully tested the use of Amazon Web Services Cloud Computing by the US Navy

As part of the annual exercise of the Trident Warrior U.S. Navy, Dataline LLC successfully demonstrated that a standard onboard communication infrastructure can be used to manage Amazon, Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), and Simple Storage Service (S3) services. The experiment presented during a planned failure at a Trident Warrior lab period, Dataline Secure Cloud Computing used an on-board simulated infrastructure to demonstrate secure access to selected collaboration applications and geospatial information services (GIS). The purpose was to validate the capability of a Commercial Infrastructure as a Service (IAAS) to support the Department of the Navy’s requirements for global connectivity, server failover and application access.

Bill Gerety, Dataline CEO, highlighted the partnership with AWS saying, “Dataline is proud to explore the use of secure cloud computing technologies with Amazon Web Services.” After observing the proof of concept, SPAWAR representatives showed similar sentiments, stating that the Navy was actively considering the use of cloud computing technologies as part of its Naval Enterprise Networks. Trident Warrior ’10 plans to continue with a laboratory period in the spring of 2010 followed by a demonstration period at sea.

“We are pleased to be working with the U.S. Navy to learn how to leverage the benefits of the AWS Cloud within their applications,” said Terry Wise, Director of Partner Relations for Amazon Web Services.
